Sylvia works with students interested in developing and putting their Spanish and intercultural skills into practice in various settings. She creates opportunities for students to understand and appreciate Latinx/Hispanic cultures through literary, cultural, and historical readings and film. She also makes it a point of getting students to engage with Spanish-speaking members of the greater Beloit community.
Nimble and adaptable to changes in the college curriculum and students’ needs, Sylvia has taught a wide variety of courses, including courses on health in Spanish-speaking communities and Spanish for heritage speakers.
Sylvia is Harry C. Moore Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures and served as Director of Student Retention from 2019-21.
